Existing hardware

Digital signage without replacing your displays.

Most signage platforms work only with panels made in the last few years, so a signage project usually opens with a hardware line nobody budgeted for. Lima's player is written to the constraints of older panels. Displays already on the wall come under management without being taken down.

The player

A player written for the browser an older display actually has.

A significant proportion of commercial displays in the field run a browser engine that stopped being updated years ago. Newer platforms do not support those browsers, so those displays fall out of scope. Lima's player code is held to the features those older browsers support. An unsupported panel can still remain in operation, since a computer or media device connected to it presents the content through the Web Player.

Playback needs only the display's built-in browser, with a small signed Lima app on Samsung panels. For device control, nothing further is installed: in the on-premises edition, Lima talks to each display over the local network, through the manufacturer's own control interface. The cloud edition plays content and reports status on the same displays, without device control or Zabbix alerts.

Operation

After installation, nobody has to visit the site.

Bringing existing displays under management happens once. From then on, updates, remote control, and fault tracking run centrally, without anyone walking up to a display.

A player that updates itself. The player fetches its own new release from the server, so an update does not mean visiting every display in turn.

Server address on the display. The application package installed on Samsung and LG displays lets the server address be set on the display itself. One package serves every installation and is not recompiled for each location.

Remote control. Panel on and off, volume, input source, and remote-control lock are changed centrally.

Fault alerts. A display that stops responding raises an alarm by webhook or Zabbix, in the monitoring system the organization already watches.

The limit of the approach

Scope is settled before any commitment.

The approach has one limit. A panel has to keep its manufacturer's control interface enabled and be reachable on the network, and a display that meets neither condition falls outside what Lima can manage.

Which displays qualify is established in a site survey, carried out before we commit to anything. In that survey, Samsung and LG displays across an IP range are scanned and listed.
